Bored Of Your Keto Diet!

Have you at anytime felt depleted with your low carb diet? Perhaps worn out on eating veggies and eggs for breakfast? Each. Damn. Day. Then again perhaps you can’t bear another day of blended greens in with avocado and bacon for dinner?

Maybe it’s not the keto food that’s boring. Maybe you get wear of meal planning. And shopping list making. And grocery shopping. If so, I feel ya!

Tracking macros every day or testing for ketones can be tiresome.

A certain level of boredom with your keto diet is to be expected.

I like to call it “ROUTINE,” lol.

Whether you call it boredom or routine or just “I can’t bear the thought of another fat bomb,” it’s also perfectly normal. Life isn’t always exciting, after all. You can get in a food rut with any diet or even no diet at all.

But when boredom makes you want to quit, it’s time to take action and make keto a little more fun. Turning to carbs or quitting keto is not the solution.

Because I have felt keto boredom myself, I came up with a list of 27 strategies to make keto fun again.!

Let’s begin…

1 — Add variety to your keto meal plan.

Some of the time only a bit of change to your keto supper plan will wipe out keto weariness and make your eating routine fun once more.

Mix up your menu.

In the event that you generally have eggs and veggies for breakfast, attempt a keto smoothie or keto oat for seven days.

If dinner is always roasted chicken or beef, steamed veggies, and a salad, add seafood more often, or roast your veggies. Add interesting toppings to your salad.

I get into the “hunk o’ cheddar and handful of nuts” snack doldrums all the time. I have to remind myself I could munch on a keto bar, have low carb veggies and dip, or eat a tasty coconut fat bomb.

Making your keto diet more interesting can be as simple as just changing up the foods you normally eat. Make a list of your favorite meals and then rotate them.

Eat according to the season.

Create your diet around foods that are in season where you live. Roast veggies in the winter and make nourishing, comforting soups.

In the summer have lighter meals, like fresh salads with grilled meats and veggies.

2 — Try new foods to conquer keto boredom.

On the off chance that you rehash the equivalent keto food sources again and again, you’re either a moderate who adores exactly the same thing, or you need extend your culinary skylines! Attempting various kinds of food varieties will help dispose of keto weariness.

Here’s how:

Nuts aren’t just for squirrels!

They are generally high in fat and there are lots of yummy nuts and nut butters. Branch out from the usual almonds, pecans, and walnuts, and enjoy macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pine nuts, and pistachios.

Berries are low in carbs.

Look for fresh or frozen blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries.

Take a walk on the wild side and try exotic meats or game.

Think venison, frog legs, antelope, bison, goose, elk, wild turkey, and yak. You may find interesting cuts of meat and sausage at farmer’s markets and local butcher shops, or order online.

There are tons of keto-friendly processed foods.

Want keto cereal? Check. Keto bread? Yep. Keto cookies? Sure thing!

There are tons of keto options at local grocery stores, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, health food stores and, my favorite, Amazon. I love being able to read reviews before I buy something new.

Searching for keto goodies on Amazon is how I discovered one of my favorite breakfasts: Low Karb brand Keto Blueberry Granola

Visit a farmer’s market.

One of the best ways to find new keto foods to try is to visit your local farmer’s market. See vegetables and low carb fruits grown by farmers in your area. Ask them for ideas on how to prepare the foods. Look at the meats and poultry offered by farmers. Many times you will find grass fed beef and bison, and free range chicken and eggs.

If you’re in the USA, just click to find farmers markets in your area: Where to find a local farmer’s market.

3 — Make your keto mealtime special.

Eating off of paper plates is extraordinary for occupied evenings, yet consider making your keto dinners special.

Set the table.

You don’t need to have fancy china, silver salt shakers, and cloth napkins to set a beautiful table. But creating a visually pleasing table setting makes your keto dining (or any eating) experience more pleasurable.

A beautifully set table says that you (and your family or guests) are important. It influences how you feel about the food on your plate.

Setting the table doesn’t have to be formal or like Thanksgiving dinner at your grandma’s when you were a kid, sitting on plastic-covered dining room chairs.

Create an atmosphere.

There are lots of ways you can make your keto meals a special (i.e., not boring!) time:

  • use fun plates and bowls that make you smile
  • artfully plate your meals and use garnishes (or throw a sprig of parsley)
  • buy funky napkins, either cloth or paper
  • light candles and dim the lights
  • play music
  • treat yourself to fresh flowers on the table.

Every meal and snack doesn’t have to be a spectacle, but make setting the table and creating a fun dinner environment a new habit.

HGTV has some really creative “elegant everyday” table settings you can look at for inspiration.

4 — Experiment with keto carb up days.

A keto carb up (sometimes called carb cycling) is intentionally eating more carbs for a meal, or an entire day. Many keto eaters include a carb up meal once a week or a few times per month.

Carb ups have several benefits:

  • #1, they help prevent keto from being boring because once a week you can eat anything you want so you never feel deprived.
  • When you don’t feel deprived, it’s easier to stick to your keto lifestyle long term.
  • It allows you to eat carbs and stay in ketosis or
  • When you carb up at night, it helps improve sleep and boost serotonin, exercise recovery, and immune function. (I learned this from the Happy Keto Body program which is how I learned to eat keto in a way that works best for my body.)
  • Carb ups help balance your hormones and women may find this practice particularly helpful.

What to eat for a carb up meal?

In a perfect world we would all carb up with wholesome carbs like sweet potatoes, white rice, fruit, or butternut squash. But in reality you can eat whatever carbs you want. A carb up meal could be a gourmet burger on a bun with French fries, mushroom risotto with a glass of your favorite wine, taco Tuesday including the chips and queso!

5 — Try new keto recipes.

When you’re bored of keto foods, it might be time to try new recipes! Channel your inner Bobby Flay and experiment with new dishes. Challenge yourself to try one or two new recipes each week and make it a game. That will definitely make your keto diet fun again!

Buy a keto cookbook (or check out your local library).

There are tons of wonderful keto cookbooks on the market. Some designed for beginners, and some for more advanced cooks.

Two of my very favorite cookbooks are:

Create a Pinterest board for keto recipes you want to try.

Pinterest is a great way to discover new recipes. Consider having one board where you save all the keto recipes you want to try some day. And another for the recipes you tried and love. That way you don’t have to sort through a ton of pins to find the keto recipe winners.

Use an app like Plan to Eat to save the keto recipes you love.

I use the Plan to Eat app for all my keto meal planning. (You can use it use it on a desktop, a tablet, and your phone.) I save all the recipes I’ve made and love to Plan to Eat and then I can drag-and-drop them on my weekly meal plan and generate a shopping list.

You can check out Plan to Eat free for 30 days (no credit card required): Try Plan to Eat

6 — Simplify your keto lifestyle.

If you’re a minimalist like I am, streamlining your eating, meal planning, and food prep is not boring, it’s refreshing. Also fun.

Are there ways you can make keto easier for you?

Maybe check your keto strips every other day instead of every day. If you eat the same types of foods, just track your macros once a week to see if you’re on track.

Plan a month’s worth of meals at one time? (And definitely save your meal plans so you don’t have to recreate the wheel every week.)

Play with intermittent fasting and eliminate the need to prepare one meal a day?

Some people may find a simplified keto lifestyle boring, so if this is you skip this tip. But for me, and other minimalists, we are happiest when things are simple.

7 — Flavor your water!

Drinking water is super important on your keto diet. Try adding a few slices of lemon, or frozen berries. Or fruit infused water.

You can add water to a pitcher in the fridge or make your own flavored water in an individual water bottle.

I have a big, 32 ounce fruit infuser water bottle. It has the ounces listed on the outside so I know exactly how much H2O I’ve had, and how I have left to drink! I just add fruit to the infuser basket (my favorite combo is strawberries and mint) and I have delicious, refreshing water to sip on all day.

Use one type of fruit in your water, like lemon, or berries, or combine fruits with herbs for a tasty treat.

Here are some delicious flavored water combinations:

  • lime and pineapple
  • peach and blackberry
  • cucumber, mint, and lime
  • blood orange and vanilla (use a tiny bit of vanilla extract)
  • watermelon and basil
  • pear, apple, and cranberry
  • blueberry and pear

Not only does flavored water taste amazing, helps to eliminate keto boredom, but the fruit and herbs add a touch of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to your diet.

8 — Delegate your grocery shopping and meal planning by using a keto meal kit service.

Meal kit services, like Green Chef, will delivery ingredients and recipes right to your door to create simple, low carb, gluten-free dinners. Using a meal kit service will definitely make your keto diet less complicated AND not boring!

I love using Green Chef when I’m bored with my keto diet or when I’m too busy or tired to cook. The meals are simple to prepare, have high quality, fresh ingredients, and I never set foot in the grocery store. They also have meals way more exciting than the ones I plan. Recent meals have been:

  • Sesame-crusted tuna with sautéed mushrooms, snap peas, bok choy, and cashews.
  • Mustard-crusted pork with cauliflower, fennel, cremini mushrooms, and sauerkraut sauce.
  • Italian shrimp and veggie bowl with lemon-herb sauce, bell pepper & cabbage, toasted walnuts.
  • Steak with sun-dried tomatoes, creamy mushrooms, chard salad with hazelnuts.

9 — Change up your coffee.

Coffee is one of those morning staples that we don’t really think about changing, right? Coffee is totally keto if you watch what you add to it, so get rid of keto boredom by altering your coffee routine.

Try a different brewing method.

I use a Keurig most days for convenience, but it feel extra special to pull out my French press and coffee grinder for a luxurious cup of java. What different brewing methods can you try?

  • Traditional drip coffee maker
  • Keurig or other k-cup machines
  • French press (don’t forget your coffee grinder!)
  • Percolator coffee maker
  • Pour over coffee maker
  • Espresso machine
  • Aeropress

Experiment with different roasts or flavored coffees.

Check out local coffee shops or your favorite grocery store. Often they have specialty blends which you can purchase whole or ground. If you usually get a light roast, try a medium. If you buy ground coffee, try whole beans and grind your own.

Just don’t use instant, lol.

Add healthy add-ins to your coffee.

If you’ve done keto for awhile no doubt you’ve heard of bulletproof or fatty coffees. There are lots of cool things you can stir in your morning joe and still stay keto:

  • MCT oil or MCT oil powder
  • full-fat coconut milk
  • collagen (I use Sports Research Collagen Peptides)
  • grassfed butter
  • organic heavy cream
  • a sprinkle of cinnamon. nutmeg, or cardamom

A new coffee mug might make you smile!

It’s all about the experience and a cute and colorful mug, or one with a snarky saying, or even an insulated travel coffee mug will definitely eliminate coffee (and keto) boredom.

I have been using this stainless steel travel mug for years and it keeps my coffee deliciously hot for hours: Thermos Stainless 16 oz Travel Tumbler I even take it with me on vacation, that’s how much I love it

10 — Treat yo’ self. Go out to eat!

It is easier than ever to enjoy a keto meal at most restaurants. The variety you can get while dining out will definitely help if you’re bored of keto food. (Or bored of grocery shopping and cooking!)

Order a meal moderate in protein, high in fat, and low in carbs.

You know that, duh. But many meals come with starchy, high carb sides like French fries, mashed potatoes, or rice. So ….

Don’t be afraid to ask your server for modifications to make your meal keto.

Most restaurants really want to please their patrons. Just ask if you can substitute extra veggies for the fries, or for extra dressing with your salad, or if their special sauce contains sugar.

If you see something on the menu (like a burger with avocado) and you’re ordering chicken and a salad, don’t be afraid to ask for avocado on your salad since you know it’s an ingredient they have on hand.

Skip the bread basket and tortilla chips.

Obviously avoid carbs and sugars that are commonly served in restaurants, like breads, rolls, bread sticks, and tortilla chips.

Avoid sides with potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, or beans.

Look for hidden sources of sugar and carbs.

I talk about this in the Keto Restaurant Guides, but be on the lookout for hidden sources of carbs in:

  • croutons
  • breading or batter
  • salad dressings
  • sauces and condiments (BBQ sauce is typically loaded with sugar!)
  • marinades
  • coleslaw
  • fried foods

If you’re unsure about any menu item, just ask your server. If they don’t know, they can always check with the chef.

11 — Herb and spices will, err, spice up your keto food life.

Herbs and spices are used to flavor food and can turn a bland meal into something special! Best of all, herbs and spices are incredibly healthy.

Herbs and spices are healing (and definitely not boring).

Depending on which herb or spice, they may help:

  • lower inflammation
  • lower blood sugar levels
  • boost the immune system
  • improve brain function and memory
  • reduce appetite

Herbs.

Herbs are the leaves of certain plants and give delicious flavor to your meals..

Try fresh, frozen or dried herbs. In the summer I grow my own, and in the winter I splurge on one or two fresh herbs each week, usually basil and cilantro.

You can even grow your own herbs indoors.

Try these popular herbs, and others:

  • basil
  • oregano
  • parsley
  • cilantro
  • mint
  • rosemary
  • thyme
  • chives
  • dill

Spice up your life!

Spices come from the bark, buds fruit, roots, seeds or stems of plants or trees. They add lots of flavor and aroma to your keto cooking. If you are unsure how to use a particular spice, google it! Here are some common spices:

  • cinnamon
  • cayenne pepper
  • allspice
  • nutmeg
  • paprika
  • ginger
  • fennel seed
  • curry powder
  • cumin
  • anise

12 — Journal about your keto journey.

Write your own keto success story in real-time by journaling! Seeing on paper (or in a Notes app or Google doc) how your life is changing will help you fight keto boredom.

I kept a journal for the first 12 weeks when I began my keto journey in earnest and reviewing it now is super helpful and inspiring. I could see how I white-knuckled through the first week or so when it was hard going from a carb-heavy diet to low carb eating. I wrote about how my food cravings went away. I journaled about how I felt lighter and healthier and not obsessed with food.

These are the things you want to re-read when the going gets tough! Or when keto gets boring.

It’s way more powerful to read your own success story than to compare yourself to anyone else’s.

I used this 12 week keto journal to track my food, plan my meals, and journal about my experience. It’s a printable planner you can download and start using right away: Printable 12 Week Keto Journal, Food Log, and Meal Planner

“Is your keto diet boring? Diving headfirst into carbs or quitting is not a solution. Instead, find ways to enjoy your keto eating and embrace your keto lifestyle.”

— The Keto Minimalist

13 — Keep the reason WHY you do keto front-and-center.

If you’ve been doing keto for a while and find it boring, get back to the reason WHY you started! Think of all the benefits keto has already brought to your life, or those you expect to enjoy.

Your reason why is deeply personal. Maybe it’s to lose weight so you can comfortably play with your kids. Or maybe you’re trying to kick pre-diabetes. Or maybe you want the food cravings OUT of your life. (That’s my reason why.)

Whatever your reason, be sure to right it down and reflect on it often. It will keep you motivated and inspired, and fight keto boredom.

14 — Throw a keto potluck party!

Keto can’t possibly be boring if you host a party, right? It’s super simple to have a fun potluck party for your keto friends.

How to be the hostess with the mostest:

  • pick a date and time
  • Decide on a theme (dinner, keto tailgate, appetizers, brunch) or no theme at all
  • Invite everyone to bring a keto dish to share — and to bring the recipe.
  • If you won’t want to deal with dishes, get some study paper plates, napkins and plastic cutlery (I love these eco friendly paper plates).
  • If you have room for everyone to sit at a table, buy or make a fun centerpiece (it can be as simple as a bowl of totally keto avocados, with lemons, oranges, and springs of fresh herbs).
  • Provide a few keto drink options such as flavored waters (see #7 above!), unsweetened ice tea, or keto lemonade. Don’t forget about ice!
  • If you or your friends want alcohol, definitely make the party BYOB.
  • Do a quick declutter of the kitchen (especially countertops) so you have room to display your keto goodies.
  • Don’t stress about what your friends bring, or if you have more desserts than main dishes. That’s the fun of a potluck!

15 — Stay motivated.

It’s hard to be bored with keto when you’re feeling highly motivated!

Read success stories on blogs, Instagram, and/or Facebook.

If you find keto before-and-after photos and success stories highly motivating, seek them out on social media. But caution…. some people — ME! — get caught in a comparison game. If you look at other’s successes and feel discouraged, this tip is not for you.

Look at the benefits of keto in your own life.

Have you lost weight? Eliminated your prediabetes? Went down a dress size? Improved your eating habits? Feel more confident and strong? Have you inspired others on their keto journey?

Sprinkle keto positivity throughout your day.

Find encouraging or motivational or funny messages and set them as alarms on your phone. Or copy keto quotes onto sticky notes and post where you will see them.

16 — Take progress pictures.

Take progress pics — and calendar to take new pics every month. (Bonus for hopping on the scale and tracking your measurements too.)

Sometimes the scale doesn’t tell the whole picture. It’s fun to look at photos to see the amazing changes keto has made in your body. And if you’re still working on those changes, you’ll be glad to have pictures from when you started!

17 — Meal prep with a keto friend.

It’s hard to be bored with keto when you food prep with a buddy. Put on your favorite music and share chopping, cooking, and assembling chores.

Start with a plan.

Decide in advance what meals or proteins, fat bombs, or side dishes you will prep and assemble.

Have each person in charge of bringing the recipe and ingredients for their dishes.

Be sure to have enough containers for your meals! I love these glass storage containers!

Chop, bake, grill, roast, and assemble together. Then split the meals.

Need keto meal prep ideas?

These are some of my favorite books for keto meal prep. They include recipes, shopping lists, assembly, cooking, and storage instructions.

  • The Complete Keto Meal Prep: 850 Easy & Delicious Recipes-1000-Day Meal Plan-10 Proven Tips for Success- Lose Up to 30 Pounds in 3 Weeks

18 — De-stress and embrace self-care.

Following a keto lifestyle is one type of self-care, but be sure to include others if you feel bored or stressed about your keto diet. A calmer, more peaceful you, is less likely to rebel against your keto diet and run to carbs for relief!

Types of self-care.

Try adding one or two of these self-care ideas into your week:

  • meditate (I use the free Calm app) or pray
  • take a bubble bath
  • light scented candles
  • stretch or do yoga
  • call a friend, your mom, or your sister
  • journal
  • get enough sleep every night
  • keep a gratitude list
  • go for a walk, bike ride, or hike
  • sit in a comfy chair and close your eyes
  • watch a funny or inspirational video on YouTube
  • listen to a podcast
  • clean and declutter your desk
  • read a book just for fun
  • binge watch your favorite Netflix series
  • sing in the shower (or in your car, or anywhere that makes you happy!)
  • declutter your social media — unfollow or mute people who bring negativity to your life
  • get a massage

19 — Losing weight on keto? Wear clothes that fit you now.

Buy a cute outfit in your new size.

You deserve to look and feel your best NOW, not just when you hit goal weight. Buying a fun (or practical) new outfit is one way to stop keto boredom AND increase your confidence.

Donate or sell clothes that no longer fit.

You can also donate old “fat clothes” that are too big. This article is great for clarity if you’re having trouble releasing your wardrobe: Should I Throw Away My Fat Clothes?

Plan your goal-weight wardrobe.

It’s fun (and free!) to plan your goal-weight wardrobe. Just create a Pinterest board for clothes you want when you hit your goal.

20 — Recreate your favorite non-keto foods or recipes.

Really, really want a high carb food? Find or create a keto version of that favorite food.. Google and Pinterest are your friends. You can find a keto version of almost anything online.

If you love the keto-friendly recipe, be sure to save it to Pinterest or Plan to Eat so you can find it in the future.

Thanks for reading and and i hope you enjoyed it and it was somewhat helpful!

7 Benefits of The Keto Diet

When you hear about the ketogenic diet, the first thing you perhaps think of is what could possibly make it as good as people say. The answer is, there are enough benefits to change your life.

What exactly is a ketogenic diet?

The keto program recommends a diet that is low on carbs, moderate on protein and high in fat. The idea is to fine-tune nutritional intake in order to send the body into the metabolic state known as ketosis.

The body enters a state of ketosis when it no longer has stores of glycogen sugar to fuel its energy needs. With sugar out of the way, the body has no choice but to tap its stores of fat to get by. The liver converts fat reserves into ketones to present to the body as an energy source. This is why the keto program is a good way to lose fat.

7 benefits of the keto diet

Unlike other diets that offer practitioners a weight loss benefit and little else, the keto diet comes with several benefits.

Weight loss

Without a doubt, weight loss is the primary goal of the keto diet. It works because it makes the body look to its fat reserves to power its metabolism. It can be interesting to go deeper into the process, however.

When the body is deprived of carbs, it enters a state of ketosis. Blood sugar and insulin levels fall when that happens. As the body taps the energy in fat cells, they release considerable quantities of water, making for some great weight loss. The fat cells are then able to enter the bloodstream and make their way to the liver, where they are turned into ketones for energy processing. As long as your diet allows you to stay in a caloric deficit, you get to enjoy the weight loss benefits of the keto diet.

It takes the edge off your appetite

When your diet isn’t heavy on carbs, you’ll find that you don’t crave as much food as before. Many people who get on the keto diet are able to fast most of the day, and only eat at mealtimes. They are simply not as hungry as before.

Improved ability to focus

When you choose a regular diet that puts carbs into the body, your brain has to deal with the rise and fall in sugar levels that happens as a result. Inconsistent energy levels can make it hard for the brain to focus. With the keto diet, however, the energy source is constant and consistent. The brain is better able to stay focused.

You feel more energetic

When you are on a regular diet, your body is always on the verge of running out of energy. You need to constantly eat and refuel. With a keto diet, however, the body taps its fat reserves, a nearly unending energy source. The body, then, is able to maintain constant energy levels throughout the day. The result is, you end up feeling a lot more energetic.

It helps you fight diabetes

When you suffer from Type II diabetes, your body experiences high levels of insulin. Since the keto diet takes excess sugar from your diet, it helps stabilize HbA1c counts, and reverse Type II diabetes.

You get improved levels of good cholesterol

HDL cholesterol helps get rid of the body’s bad cholesterol reserves. When you’re on keto, your body’s triglyceride levels fall and your HDL cholesterol levels rise.

ou get better blood pressure

When you’re on the keto diet, it drops your blood pressure. Many people on the keto diet find that they are able to stop taking blood pressure medicine altogether.

The keto diet can change a person’s life. It isn’t a difficult diet to get on, either. There are plenty of great recipes for the keto diet. All it takes is the willingness to give it a shot.

A keto diet for beginners

(This article may include affiliate links and if any sales are made I may receive a small commission)

A ketogenic diet – or keto diet – is a low-carb, high-fat eating routine. It tends to be successful for weight reduction and certain medical issue, something that has been exhibited in numerous examinations.

A keto diet is particularly helpful for losing overabundance muscle to fat ratio without hunger, and for further developing sort 2 diabetes or metabolic disorder.

In this current amateur’s aide, you’ll figure out how to eat a keto diet. Our visual aides, plans, dinner plans, and straightforward 2-week Get Started program are all you require to prevail on keto.

1. What is a keto diet?

A keto diet is one that limits carbs and has many potential health benefits.

When you eat far fewer carbs, your body begins to burn fat for fuel. This can put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. In this state, your liver turns fat into small energy molecules called ketones, which your brain and other organs can use for energy.Eating a keto diet lowers insulin levels, often dramatically, which can help you access your body fat stores for energy. Many studies show significant weight loss on keto, without having to count calories. Keto diets may have other positive health effects, such as reducing blood sugar levels.
Learn more about ketosis

Summary

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It can help the body burn more fat, reduce hunger, and reduce blood sugar levels.

2. What to eat on a keto diet?

Here are typical foods to enjoy on a ketogenic diet. The numbers are net carbs per 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of food.

To remain in ketosis, foods with lower counts are generally better:

What’s the main thing to do to arrive at ketosis? Try not to eat such a large number of carbs. You’ll probably have to remain under 50 grams of net carbs (absolute carbs short fiber) each day, preferably under 20 grams.

The less carbs you eat, the more successful the eating regimen seems, by all accounts, to be for arriving at ketosis, getting thinner, or further developing sort 2 diabetes.

Checking carbs can be useful from the get go. Be that as it may, on the off chance that you adhere to our suggested food varieties and plans you can remain keto even without checking.

Planning keto

With the right strategy, creating keto meals is easy.

One way is to start by picking a protein source, such as meat, fish, seafood, eggs, or tofu. Then, to complete your meal, choose two low-carb vegetables and add a healthy source of fat.

What to drink

What can you drink on a ketogenic diet? Water is the perfect drink, and coffee or tea are fine too. Ideally, use no sweeteners, especially sugar.

A splash of milk or cream in your coffee or tea is OK, but beware that the carbs can add up if you drink multiple cups in a day (and definitely avoid caffe lattes!). The occasional glass of wine is fine, too.

Try to avoid

Here’s what you should avoid on a keto diet – foods containing a lot of carbs, both the sugary and the starchy kind. This includes foods like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. These foods are very high in carbs.

The numbers are grams of net carbs per 100 grams (3.5 ounces), unless otherwise noted.

Also, avoid or limit highly processed foods and instead fill your diet with our recommended keto-friendly food options.

Summary

Base your keto meals on meat, poultry, fish, eggs and other protein-rich foods. Include lots of leafy greens, non-starchy veggies, and salads. Use fats like olive oil for flavor and to fill in calories, if needed. Avoid sugary and starchy foods. Drink water, tea, or coffee.

Keto macros: Carbs, protein, & fat

When following a keto diet, the idea is to eat very few carbs, a moderate amount of protein, and just as much fat as you need to feel satisfied, rather than stuffed.

Carbohydrates
Limit carbs to 20 or fewer grams of net carbs per day, or 5 to 10% of calories. Although it’s possible that you may not need to be this strict, eating fewer than 20 grams of net carbs every day virtually guarantees that you’ll be in nutritional ketosis. Learn more >

Protein
Eat enough protein to meet your needs. Most people need at least 70 grams per day, or 20 to 35% of calories from protein. Learn more >

Fat
Include enough fat to add flavor. There’s no reason to add lots of fat unless you need extra calories. Plus, many whole foods like eggs and meat contain plenty of fat. On a keto diet, about 60 to 75% of your calories come from fat.

The-Keto-Diet-Pros-Cons-And-Tips

If considering this diet, here’s some food for thought

The ketogenic or “keto” diet was originally developed to help manage epilepsy. Now it’s the latest weight-loss fad. The diet flips the balance of carbs and fats that are traditionally recommended for good health, like so:

USDA GUIDELINES:55% Carbs20% Protein25% Fat
KETO DIET:5% Carbs20% Protein75% Fat
The idea behind the diet

Carbs are the main source of fuel for your body and brain. On the keto diet, however, carbs are severely restricted to force your body to find fuel elsewhere. It does that by breaking down fat into compounds called ketones, which it uses for fuel. In this state, called ketosis, your protein balance is very important — too much protein can stop ketosis, but too little will make you lose lean muscle mass.

This diet is not recommended for you if you have a disease of the pancreas, liver, thyroid, kidney or gallbladder, if you have a history of kidney stones or eating disorders, or if you’ve had your gallbladder removed. Otherwise, if you’re thinking about it, consider this:

Three pros
  • Many people do lose weight, and some studies find that people feel less hungry while in ketosis.
  • Some research suggests potential benefits for controlling blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity.
  • The diet cuts out nearly all processed foods, which is always a good thing.
Three cons
  • Giving up whole grains, beans, fruits and many veggies can cause nutrient deficiencies and constipation.
  • Common short-term side effects include fatigue, headache, brain fog and upset stomach, aka “keto flu.” Long-term health risks include kidney stones, osteoporosis and liver disease. Other risks are unknown, since no long-term studies exist.
  • Many people have trouble sticking with such a restrictive diet (it ranked nearly last on the U.S. News 2018 list of “Easiest Diets to Follow”). For others, its rigid nature can lead to obsessive and disordered eating.

Three tips, if you choose to try it
  • Focus your fats on unsaturated, heart-healthy choices, such as fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocados.
  • For your carbs, eat as wide a variety of high-fiber veggies as you can, such as broccoli, kale, arugula, Brussel’s sprouts and bell peppers.
  • If you find the keto diet too hard and you’d prefer to make changes that you can live with, ask a dietitian to tailor a diet to your needs.

Ketogenic Diet Therapy for Epilepsy

Probably the most seasoned treatment for epilepsy is the exemplary ketogenic diet, which includes devouring high-fat food varieties and not very many starches. Johns Hopkins is a longstanding pioneer in this method of treatment.

To be effective, this treatment calls for severe consistence and a lot of tolerance, particularly initially. Generally significant, patients with epilepsy should just utilize the eating regimen with the help of a proficient ketogenic diet group, including a specialist and an authorized dietitian who can effectively figure and screen the eating routine for every person.

Ketogenic Diet for Epilepsy: Why Choose Johns Hopkins

As a patient, you benefit from the support of our highly skilled dietitians and neurologists who work together and customize the diets to fit your health goals and lifestyle.

  • The pediatric epilepsy team at Johns Hopkins has almost 100 years of experience in treating epilepsy with the ketogenic diet.
  • More than 1,500 children have been enrolled in our ketogenic diet program for seizures.
  • Johns Hopkins developed the modified Atkins diet in 2002 as a treatment for adolescents and adults and opened the world’s first adult epilepsy diet center.

For Children: The Pediatric Ketogenic Diet Center

The pediatric epilepsy team at Johns Hopkins has used the high fat, low carbohydrate ketogenic diet to address seizures since the diet’s therapeutic origins in the 1920s. We are one of the premiere centers in the world for clinical and research expertise on the ketogenic diet, having treated over 1,500 children with this approach.

Our group collaborates with many other epilepsy centers around the world, including our partners at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Florida.

Treatment for Your Child

After parents submit the child’s medical information, our team reviews it carefully to determine if a ketogenic diet is an appropriate treatment, and which version may work best for each child. We usually see the child for a one-hour office visit before admission to the ketogenic diet program.

We admit approximately four children ranging from infants to adolescents each month to participate in the therapeutic ketogenic diet program. New patients take part in a 3-day orientation (Monday through Wednesday) that starts the child on the diet and provides education for the family. After that, we follow up with the patients in our clinic every one to three months.

Ketogenic Diet: Second Opinions

In many ways, the ketogenic diet is as much an art as a science, and effective fine-tuning of any child’s diet depends on experience.

With this in mind, our experts offer single, hour-long, second opinion visits and dietary guidance for families of children who are working with other ketogenic diet centers. Parents can contact the center 410-955-9100 for details on how to send medical records for review.

Training International Professionals

Practitioners from hospitals both in the U.S. and abroad who wish to start a ketogenic diet center at their institutions can participate in one of our 1- or 2-week training sessions for a fee. The training covers both the ketogenic and modified Atkins diets. Professionals affiliated with centers already using ketogenic diet programs are welcome to attend our monthly ketogenic diet follow-up clinics.

For Adults: Johns Hopkins Adult Epilepsy Diet Center

The ketogenic diet has been used to treat children with epilepsy for almost a century. Our center, which opened in 2010, is the first-ever clinic to offer ketogenic diet therapy specially designed for adults with epilepsy.

Our regimen is a modification of the classic ketogenic diet, similar to the Atkins diet. Recent studies have shown that this modified Atkins diet lowers seizure rates in nearly half of adults that try it, usually within a few months. Unlike the ketogenic diet for children, this therapy does not require a hospital stay, an initial fasting period, food weighing, fluid measuring, or calorie counting.

Your local neurologist will continue to be your primary neurologist and prescribe your seizure medications and the clinic provides consultative services.

Candidacy: Ketogenic Diet as a Treatment for Epilepsy

Our clinic is recommended to adults with epilepsy who fit one or more of these criteria:

  • You have tried multiple medications for seizure control in the past with limited success.
  • You have a vagus nerve stimulator.
  • You have glucose type 1 transporter deficiency syndrome (GLUT1 DS)
  • You have gotten good results with ketogenic diet therapies for epilepsy in the past and want to try again.
  • You are an adult with epilepsy who is overweight, or who has diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea or high blood pressure.
  • You are awaiting epilepsy surgery.

Preparing for Your Appointment

If you are from outside the Baltimore/Washington area, your your local neurologist will continue to be your primary neurologist and handle your seizure medications. We will need all your medical records in advance so we can review them and ensure the modified Atkins diet or ketogenic diet is appropriate for you. International patients should request appointments through the Johns Hopkins International Office.

We will also request lab work in advance as well to check your kidney function and cholesterol. If the diet is appropriate, we will then check your insurance and schedule you for a one-hour clinic visit with one of our epileptologists, either Dr. Cervenka or Dr. McDonald.

We will ask you to keep a three-day record of all of the foods you eat before coming to see us in clinic.

What to Expect

First Visit: Starting the Modified Atkins Diet
Your first visit is likely to be scheduled on a Friday and last from the morning into the afternoon. You will see the epilepsy doctor and the dietitian.

After the visit you can join other new dietary therapy patients at a teaching session presented by the Adult Epilepsy Diet Center team that introduces you to the diet. You will receive helpful references and recipes to get you started, and also have an opportunity to meet with the dietitian one-on-one for individualized counseling.

Starting the Diet
Once you start on the diet, it is important to not change your seizure medications immediately so that we can gauge the effects of the diet on your seizures. We will ask you to check and keep track of your urine ketones and your weight, and to keep a seizure calendar.

Is a keto diet the best way to lose weight?

The low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet is advanced on the web and in the media as a weight reduction apparatus and apparently all-round supernatural healer. However it was first evolved during the 1920s for kids with epilepsy.

There’s no deficiency of superstar and force to be reckoned with fans. Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino (or as he considers himself on Instagram ‘Keto Guido’), Kourtney Kardashian and Halle Berry all supporter the keto diet. In any case, even the wellbeing and health forces to be reckoned with may not be qualified nutritionists or dieticians. “Nourishing guidance is profoundly unregulated, especially on the web”, says dietitian Sophie Medlin.

As of now, #keto has around 14 million labels on Instagram.

At the point when you’re following a keto diet you intend to be in a condition of ‘ketosis’. We ask the specialists what ketosis is, in case it merits the exertion and in case it’s protected.

What do you eat on a keto diet?

Your body utilizes whichever fuel source is most promptly accessible. This is typically glucose (sugar) changed over from starches. On the off chance that you radically limit your sugar utilization and supplant it with fat, your body is at last compelled to utilize fat from food or your stores as energy all things considered. This cycle is called ‘ketosis’. “It is basically the Atkins diet repackaged and renamed”, says Medlin.

“The vast majority calling their eating routine ‘keto’ are basically following a low or exceptionally low-carb diet”, she proceeds. How much you need to confine carbs to be in ketosis “fluctuates from one individual to another”, she adds. In a clinical or remedial setting, for example, for kids with epilepsy, the eating routine is planned explicitly for the individual and backing and observing are given.

Low-carb, high-fat fixings incorporate avocados, meat, fish, eggs, cheddar, cream, oil, spread, nuts and seeds. However, not all fixings should be high in fat – mixed greens and berries are frequently included, for instance. You stay away from, or possibly vigorously limit, wheat and different grains, potatoes, corn, beats, beans, milk, most leafy foods.

To actuate ketosis, a limit of 20–50g carbs can be devoured every day for somebody eating 2,000 calories per day, as per a 2019 paper on the ketogenic diet. To place this into point of view, a banana contains about 20g and a plain bagel 44g. Protein is additionally normally kept to a moderate sum, as it can support the creation of glucose and interfere with ketosis.

The keto diet has not many standards on which high-fat food varieties to eat, and ‘messy keto’ can comprise of bacon and frankfurters singed in margarine, as this in fact meets the models. Medlin says the good dieting rules ought to in every case generally apply, regardless of whether you limit carbs and paying little heed to what diet you’re following.

Will a keto diet help you lose weight?

Exploration has shown a ketogenic diet can incite quick weight reduction, somewhat from water misfortune yet in addition some fat misfortune. Notwithstanding, the “weight reduction impact becomes like other dietary methodologies following one year”, as indicated by a 2019 survey of low-carb counts calories.

Taking in less energy than you consume will prompt weight reduction. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey reports that on normal we get just about 50% of our energy from carbs. “Cutting this by essentially half is probably going to decrease complete calorie admission, regardless of whether it’s supplanted with fats”, says Medlin. Then again, on the off chance that you eat a greater number of calories from fat than your body needs it will in any case be put away as fat.

The ‘eat like me to seem as though me’ philosophy is imperfect. “We as a whole have distinctive hereditary qualities and ways of life, which implies we can’t all appear to be identical”, says Medlin. Exploration shows the best weight reduction diet is the one you can adhere to for enough time to decrease overabundance muscle versus fat.

CLICK HERE for some amazing keto diets

Long haul consistence with the keto diet is low. Medlin refers to confining an entire nutritional category, side effects known as ‘keto influenza’ (counting migraines, sickness, obstruction, sleepiness and trouble dozing) which can kick in following two to seven days, and the higher-than-normal expense of the eating routine as potential reasons why individuals may battle to adhere to it.

“The keto diet is utilized for certain remedial circumstances and isn’t intended for the standard weight reduction market”, says dietitian Priya Tew. “Sugars have a significant job in our eating regimens and while lessening them might help weight reduction it isn’t reasonable to diminish them to an exceptionally low level.”

Is a keto diet safe?

“A significant number of the preliminaries examining ketogenic consumes less calories just chase after members for a half year as long as one year and no more”, says nutritionist Emma Thornton, “in this way, the more drawn out term impacts… aren’t surely known.”

Medlin says the wellbeing hazards additionally rely upon the sorts of food eaten. Eating an unfortunate eating routine containing bunches of immersed fat might expand wellbeing dangers like coronary illness and stroke.

Food varieties containing carbs are frequently additionally high in fiber, which is significant for a solid gut microbiome and saving you more full for more. Medlin prompts anybody on a low-carb diet to guarantee they eat sufficient fiber-rich food varieties from salad greens, broccoli, cauliflower, flax seeds, nuts, coconut and avocado.

The keto diet limits boring vegetables like carrots, yams, parsnips, pumpkin and squash and kills numerous natural products. This may confine the sum and assortment of supplements, nutrients and phytochemicals (plant power) you get from your food, particularly in the event that you eliminate them as opposed to supplant them.

Individuals who limit their starches and increment greasy food sources might create ‘keto influenza’. There is next to no clinical examination on this, yet there are a large number of individual declarations. However it sounds upsetting, it isn’t really dangerous and numerous reports show the inconvenience dies down. It is additionally not satisfactory whether it just happens on the keto eat less or can be brought about by other prohibitive weight control plans.

KETO Ketogenic diet benefits

(This article may include affiliate links and if any sales are made I may receive a small commission)

Choosing a ketogenic diet for diabetes management offers a range of valuable benefits.

Research shows that being in a state of nutritional ketosis notably leads to significant improvement in blood glucose control and weight loss.

Other common benefits provided include:

  • Reduced dependence on medication
  • Improvements in insulin sensitivity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Usually improvements in cholesterol levels

In this guide, we review the science behind the ketogenic diet and how it works to provide all of these different benefits.

Weight loss and maintenance

A primary benefit of the ketogenic diet is its ability to achieve rapid weight loss Restricting carbohydrates enough to be in a state of ketosis leads to both a significant reduction in body fat and an increase or retention of muscle mass.

Studies show that low-carb, ketogenic diets are able to achieve strong weight loss over an extended period. An Australian study showed that obese people were able to lose, on average, 15 kg over a period of a year. This was 3 kg more than the low-fat diet used in the study achieved.

Blood glucose control

The other main reason for people with diabetes to follow a ketogenic diet is its ability to lower and stabilise blood sugar levels.

Carbohydrate is the nutrient (macronutrient) that raises blood sugar the most. Because ketogenic diets are very-low in carbohydrate, they eliminate the larger rises in blood sugar.

Studies into ketogenic diets show them to be very effective at reducing HbA1c – a long-term measure of blood glucose control. A 6-month study ran by Eric Westman and colleagues in 2008 showed an average reduction in HbA1c levels of 17 mmol/mol (1.5%) for people with type 2 diabetes.

People with other types of diabetes, such as type 1 diabetes and, should also expect to see a strong reduction in blood sugar levels and an improvement in control.

Note that if an improvement in blood glucose control is maintained over a number of years, this can reduce the risk of complications occurring.

It is important that anyone on insulin, or otherwise at risk of hypos, takes precautions to prevent hypos occurring. Speak to your doctor for help with this.

Reducing reliance on diabetes medication

Because they’re so effective at reducing blood sugar levels, ketogenic diets have the additional benefit of helping people with type 2 diabetes to reduce their dependence on diabetes medication.

CLICK HERE to see some fantastic ketogenic diets

In the study by Westman mentioned above, 95% of the people in the study were able to reduce, or come off completely, their diabetes medication.

People on insulin and other hypo-causing medication (such as sulphonylureas and glinides ) may need to reduce their doses in advance of starting a ketogenic diet to prevent hypos. Speak to your doctor for advice on this.

Insulin sensitivity

A ketogenic diet has been shown to help restore insulin sensitivity, as it eliminates the root cause of insulin resistance – which is too high levels of insulin in the body.

This diet helps promote sustained periods of low insulin, as low levels of carbohydrate mean lower levels of insulin.

A high carbohydrate diet is like putting petrol on the fire of insulin resistance High carbohydrate means a greater need for insulin and this make insulin resistance worse.

By comparison, a ketogenic diet, turns insulin levels down, as fat is the macronutrient that requires the least insulin.

Getting the levels of insulin down also helps with fat burning, because high insulin levels prevent the breakdown of fat. When insulin levels drop for a number of hours, the body is able to break down fat cells.

High blood pressure control

It is estimated that 16 million people are living witha high blood pressure in the UK.

A range of health conditions are associated with high blood pressure, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. It is also a feature of metabolic syndrome.

A number of studies have shown that a ketogenic diet can decrease blood pressure levels in people that are overweight or with type 2 diabetes.

Cholesterol levels

Overall, ketogenic diets usually result in improvements of cholesterollevels. It is usual for LDL cholesterol levels to go down and HDL cholesterol levels go up, which is healthy.

One of the strongest measures of healthy cholesterol is the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. This can be easily found by taking your total cholesterol result and dividing it by your HDL result.

If the number you get is 3.5 or lower, this indicates a healthy cholesterol. Research studies show that ketogenic diets are usually effective at improving this measure of cholesterol health.

Note that some people may show an increase in LDL and total cholesterol after starting a ketogenic. This is usually regarded as a negative sign but if your total cholesterol to HDL ratio is good, this does not necessarily represent a worsening in heart health.

Cholesterol is a complicated topic and your doctor is the best source of advice if your cholesterol levels change significantly on a ketogenic diet.

In the UK you should have your cholesterol levels monitored at least once per year so that any negative effects on cholesterol can be spotted and dealt with appropriately.

Stronger mental performance

Mental clarity, an increased ability to focus and a better memory are other commonly reported benefits of eating a ketogenic diet.

Increasing intake of healthy fats with omega-3, such as those found in oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, can improve mood and learning ability. This is because omega-3 increases a fatty acid called DHA that makes up between 15 to 30 per cent of our brain.

The production of beta-hydroxybutyrate, a form of ketone, helps support long-term memory function.

Satiety

Ketogenic diets have positive effects on appetite. Once the body adapts to being in a state of ketosis, it gets used to getting energy from breaking down body fat and this can reduce appetite and cravings.

They are effective at:

  • Reducing cravings
  • Helping you feel full for longer
  • Reducing preference for sugary foods

Weight loss as a result of a ketogenic diet can help lower leptin levels which can improve leptin sensitivity and benefit satiety as a result.

Candida

Ketogenic diets can be good at reducing thrush and yeast infections as they lower blood sugar, which reduces glucose being passed out in the urine.

It is glucose in the urine that bacteria feed off that leads to a fertile breeding ground for yeast and bacterial infections.

In addition to that, a higher intake of a saturated fatty acid called lauric acid – found in coconut oil, a staple keto food – has been shown to have anti-microbial properties. It can kill off candida albican and help with yeast infections.

10 Steps Beginners Should Take Before Trying the Keto Diet

The ketogenic diet — a high-fat and very low carb eating plan — can be tough to start. After all, it’s likely a radical departure from the way you’re eating now (a typical standard American diet is high in carbohydrates and processed foods). But many people are trying the keto diet, which puts your body in a state of ketosis. That’s what happens when your body’s carb-burning switch flips to a fat-burning one, a change that can cause weight loss and has even been credited with controlling type 2 diabetes, a small past study suggests. (1)

How do you make practical preparations in stocking your fridge and preparing mentally for the big change to come? Consider this your step-by-step guide.

1. Know What Foods You’ll Eat and Avoid on the Ketogenic Diet

In following a keto meal plan, you’ll be severely limiting carbs. Start off with between 20 and 30 grams (g) of carbohydrates per day, says the New York City–based dietitian Kristen Mancinelli, RD, author of The Ketogenic Diet: A Scientifically Proven Approach to Fast, Healthy Weight Loss.

Also make sure that you know what foods have mostly carbs, fat, and protein, so you can make the right choices. For instance, it’s not just bread, pasta, chips, cookies, candy, and ice cream that contain carbs. Beans may contain protein, but they’re also very high in carbohydrates. Fruit and veggies also mostly contain carbs. The only foods that don’t contain carbs are meat (protein) and pure fats, like butter and oils (including olive oil and coconut oil).

2. Examine Your Relationship With Fat — Keto Involves Lots of It!

“People are afraid of fat because they’ve been told that it’ll kill them,” says Mancinelli. What is confusing is that research today remains mixed. Some studies suggest that replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat (and avoiding unhealthy trans fat) is important for mitigating heart disease risk, while others suggest that total fat and types of fat weren’t associated with cardiovascular problems, according to an article published in June 2018 in BMJ. (2) Deciding exactly how to eat then becomes confusing. What is helpful, the authors note, is to remember that food is more than a single nutrient, and it’s the overall quality of the diet that counts. (They do say that high-fat, low-carb diets still need more research to assess their long-term health benefits and risks.)

To prepare for a high-fat diet, which can be uncomfortable at first, start making small adjustments to what you eat every day, she suggests, like ordering a burger on lettuce leaves and subbing green veggies for fries.MORE ON KETO FATS

avocado and milk, which are good and bad fats

The Best and Worst Fats to Eat on the Ketogenic Diet

Instead of potatoes or rice with your meal, opt for a nonstarchy veggie. Start cooking with more oil, such as olive or avocado oil. Realize that old dieting habits — like making a plain skinless grilled chicken breast — just don’t make sense on a keto diet because you won’t get enough fat.

“Slowly start pushing out carbs and getting in fat. If you’re afraid of fat, a ketogenic diet won’t work for you,” she says.

3. Switch Up Your View of Protein — This Is a Moderate-Protein Diet

One of the most common misconceptions about the keto diet is that you can eat as much protein as you’d like. But this is not a diet where you watch carbs only — you also have to keep your protein intake moderate, says Ginger Hultin, a Seattle-based registered dietitian, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition, and the owner of Champagne-Nutrition. Protein can be converted into glucose, and therefore overeating protein can take your body out of ketosis. Think of your ratios as a small portion of meat topped with a generous amount of fat, rather than the other way around.

4. Hone Your Cooking Skills to Make Fresh Fare, as High-Carb Processed Foods Aren’t Okay on Keto

Look at a variety of keto websites and cookbooks for keto-approved recipes you’ll love. Mancinelli recommends finding four to five recipes with foods you know you’ll like. “That way you’re not standing around wondering what to eat, and turn to carbs,” she says.

5. Try Bulletproof Coffee — It’s One of the Best Keto-Friendly Drinks

Made by mixing coconut oil and butter into your coffee, this drink will help keep your hunger at bay, giving you time to plan your next meal, advises Mancinelli.

Just note that coconut oil has the potential to send LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol levels soaring, so if you have heart disease or are at an increased risk for it because of family or personal health history, you’ll likely want to avoid this drink. To be on the safe side, check with your doctor.

6. Talk to Your Family About Your Weight Loss Goals on the Diet

Tell them your plan. You may not be able to eat what they’re eating during family mealtimes, so you’ll want to prepare them (and yourself) for what your new habits will look like. Because this diet is often done only short term (three to six months), you can assure them that it’s temporary.

If you get pushback, announce: “I’ve done my research, I’ve figured out it’s safe, and I really want to try this,” recommends Mancinelli. They don’t have to like what you’re doing, but it does help if they have your back. In a study published in September 2014 research in Obesity, having the support of friends and coworkers helped dieters more successfully lose weight and maintain that loss over a two-year period. (4) It also can’t hurt if everyone knows your goals on a keto diet so they’re less likely to push office treats or suggest splitting a side of fries when you’re out to dinner.

7. Know What Side Effects to Expect (for Example, the ‘Keto Flu’)

For all the attributes of a ketogenic diet (like weight loss), there’s one big side effect you have to be prepared for: the keto flu.

The keto flu is a term that refers to the period after you start the diet when your body is adjusting to burning fat for energy. “Some people have no problem with it and others are miserable,” says Mancinelli.

In the first week or 10 days, you may feel extremely lethargic in your limbs. Walking upstairs may feel impossible. You may deal with mental fog. Often, keto causes constipation, or potentially diarrhea, because of a change in fiber intake.

For that reason, you should pick a start date when your week isn’t crazy with deadlines and obligations; choose a slower time when you can rest as needed. Along the same lines, you’ll want to be sure to take it easy with exercise for the first week or two as your body adjusts to burning more fat rather than carbs for fuel.

8. Up Your Electrolytes to Prevent or Mitigate Unpleasant Keto Side Effects

In ketosis, Mancinelli explains, your kidneys excrete more water and electrolytes. Make sure you’re getting the sodium and potassium your body needs to function well. Salt your foods, drink salted bone broth, and eat nonstarchy veggies, such as asparagus, kale, bell peppers, and arugula.

9. Acknowledge When Keto Might Not Be Right for You

Now that ketogenic diets have become popular, many keto hybrid diets have sprung up, including plant-based versions. (One is “ketotarian,” which is predominantly plant-based but includes the option of eggs, ghee, and fish and shellfish.) While this approach can be healthy, Hultin cautions against trying keto as a vegan. “Because you can’t eat beans or lentils on a ketogenic diet, and nuts and seeds are even limited due to their carbohydrate content, you’re really just left with some tofu and will need to rely on low-carb protein powder,” she says. There is a good possibility this won’t pan out. “I don’t see this as a sustainable diet due to the extreme restrictions,” she says.

In addition, there are medical conditions that should make you think twice about starting keto — or at least talk to your doctor before trying it out. Those include people on insulin, as well as those on oral and noninsulin injectable medications for high blood sugar or high blood pressure, says Hultin. Even struggling with GI issues may be a barrier to starting. “One of the side effects of a ketogenic diet is constipation, so if that’s a struggle, there’s serious reason not to go on this relatively low-fiber diet,” says Hultin. Last consideration: If existing personal dietary restrictions require you to avoid foods like soy, eggs, nuts, dairy, or seafood, a ketogenic diet may be too limiting for you. Coming from a place of elimination in an already restrictive diet can make it incredibly tough to follow, she says.

10. Have an After Plan, Because Keto Isn’t Meant to Be a Long-Term Weight Loss Solution

A keto diet is not a forever diet. It’s designed to be short-term. While Mancinelli says that some people go on a keto diet a few times per year, others will use it to lose weight and change their eating habits.

A whopping 46 percent of American adults still eat what’s considered a “poor” diet in American Heart Association standards, notes a study published in June 2016 in JAMA, which was based on a survey of nearly 34,000 people. For some people, going on a keto diet is an effort to change those poor habits, but there’s the risk of falling back into your old ways once the diet is over. Don’t go straight back to a standard American diet, because you’ll likely lose any health benefits and regain the weight.

Your ultimate goal should be “to shift your diet to a healthier pattern that involves eating less bread, less pasta, less flour, and less sugar,” as well as more nonstarchy veggies, she says.

Think about what that will look like for you once the keto diet is over. How will you use this temporary diet as a springboard to bettering your long-term health?

The Keto Diet – Everything You Need to Know.

There are a million and one different diets out there for anyone to try, but one that has been around for many years and is extremely popular is the Keto diet.

Also known as the Ketogenic diet and often just referred to as a ‘low carb diet’, the Keto diet is a total lifestyle choice as opposed to a quick fix.

What Is Keto and How Does It Work?

The purpose of the Keto diet is to essentially reduce your carb intake while upping your fat and protein consumption in an attempt to put the body in a state of increased metabolism known as ‘ketosis’. During this state, the body will more effectively burn fat whilst also turning fat into ketones which are believed to naturally provide the body with a number of health and wellness benefits.

The daily consumption of all food groups and nutrients differs from person to person, but it’s generally recommended to keep carbohydrates to under 20g a day whilst ensuring around 70% of your diet is fat which can be anywhere up to 177g of fat a day depending on your total calorie intake!

What Can You Eat on Keto?

Although you need to consume a lot of fat on a daily basis for the keto diet to work, dieters are advised to choose healthy sources of fat, which often includes foods such as:

  • Eggs
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Avocado
  • Oils such as coconut, olive and avocado
  • Butter
  • Cream
  • Cheese
  • Yoghurt

The main principle of keto is to be low-carb which also includes sugar, so foods that have to be given a miss or at least kept to a minimum include:

  • Bread
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Potatoes
  • A lot of fruits
  • Chocolate
  • Biscuits
  • Ice cream

Keto vs Atkins

Most of us have heard of the Atkins diet and when you read into it, you may think there isn’t much difference between the two but here’s the low down:

Fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, maltose and sucrose are the main kinds of sugar in foods and are all to be eaten in moderation on the Keto diet, hence cow’s milk isn’t recommended due to the high lactose content whereas many dairy-containing cheeses are much lower in lactose.

Atkins is a branded diet. Similarly to Slimming World or Weight Watchers, the Atkins way of eating is branded, you can buy Atkins food products, cookbooks and pay for a membership to support your weight loss plan, however, the principles aren’t much different to Keto.

Atkins is still a low carb, high-fat diet, however, Atkins dieters are encouraged to opt for healthy fats as much as possible and the plan allows you to make this way of eating a bit more sustainable by creating proper, balanced meals, as opposed to just eating plates of high-fat ingredients.

The Atkins plan can be seen as a more guided way of following the Keto principles with clearer guidelines of how much of each nutrient you should be consuming per day, as well as stronger recommendations for how to follow the diet healthily.

Is the Keto Diet Recommended?

As with every diet, there are advocates and sceptics for the Keto diet. Some people have seen incredible weight loss results with this diet and even claim it has revolutionised their health, whereas others have found the diet simply unsustainable and a totally alien way of eating.

The Keto diet is a lifestyle overhaul. A lot of planning, preparation and thought has to go into what you eat on the Keto diet and that is due to the fact that it is an elimination diet. When you remove food groups from your diet or drastically reduce how much you are ‘allowed’, you then have to think ahead a lot more to ensure the food you have with you at mealtimes is suitable and this can make the diet difficult.

There’s no denying that in some areas, the Keto diet does restrict what you can eat and these kinds of diets do create an obsessive mindset. Dieting and weight loss is known to become more difficult the more you think about it and as this diet isn’t the simplest, you do have to dedicate a lot of time and thought to it which can be a challenge in itself.

Exclusion diets can also lead to cravings – you always want to eat what you’re not allowed, don’t you?

Here at Bodyline Clinic, we offer dietary advice with all of our medical weight loss prescriptions and this exclusion style of dieting is not something we typically recommend. This isn’t because diets such as Keto don’t work, because they do for some, but our medications are all about cutting cravings and losing weight as easily as possible and a diet plan like Keto does not generally promote this.
